Let's Talk Gold!
Is there a difference between gold-filled and gold-plated? Yes, there are a couple differences. Not only are their manufacturing processes different, but the amount of gold alloy used on gold-filled pieces is different than on gold-plated.
When it comes to jewelry, there are many terms and phrases that can be confusing. Two common terms you may come across are "gold-filled" and "gold- plated." While they may sound similar, they actually refer to two different processes of applying gold to jewelry. In this blog post, we'll explore the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated, so you can make an informed decision when purchasing your next piece of jewelry.
What is Gold-Filled?
Gold-filled jewelry is made by bonding a thick layer of gold to a base metal, usually brass or copper. The gold layer is mechanically bonded to the base metal, making it much more durable than gold-plated jewelry. In fact, gold-filled jewelry can last a lifetime with proper care. The gold content in gold-filled jewelry is legally required to be at least 5% of the total weight. This means that gold-filled jewelry contains a much higher amount of gold compared to gold-plated jewelry.
What is Gold-Plated?
Gold-plated jewelry, on the other hand, is made by applying a thin layer of gold to a base metal through a process called electroplating. The gold layer in gold-plated jewelry is much thinner compared to gold-filled jewelry. While gold-plated jewelry can be beautiful and affordable, the thin layer of gold may wear off over time, exposing the base metal underneath.
Elliot Lane bracelets are designed with both gold-filled and gold-plated. Our round beaded bracelets are gold-filled and come in several sizes. We have 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and 8mm. The cost of these bracelets are a little more expensive but they will last for many years to come. We love these bracelets because they are so versatile and go great with any bracelet you are wearing. These bracelets are perfect for everyday wear and can be worn daily without any tarnishing or peeling.
Although our gold-filled bracelets are easy on the day-to-day wear and tear, they still need to be taken care of properly. We recommend taking off your gold-filled jewelry when swimming, putting on lotion or with any type of chemical.
Which One Should You Choose?
The choice between gold-filled and gold-plated jewelry depends on your personal preferences and budget. If you're looking for a piece of jewelry that will last a long time and can withstand everyday wear, gold-filled jewelry is the way to go. It offers a higher gold content and greater durability. On the other hand, if you're looking for a more affordable option or a piece of jewelry that you'll only wear occasionally, gold-plated jewelry can be a good choice. Just keep in mind that the gold layer may wear off over time and may need to be re-plated.
Gold-filled and gold-plated jewelry may sound similar, but they have distinct differences. Gold-filled jewelry offers a thicker layer of gold and greater durability, while gold-plated jewelry is more affordable but may wear off over time. Consider your budget, lifestyle, and preferences when choosing between the two. Whether you opt for gold filled or gold-plated, both can add a touch of elegance and style to your jewelry collection.
